Naruto and Sasuke have a time out where they are just standing and talking and not doing anything physical. Sasuke has two tomoe so far. Sasuke asks Naruto why he is doing all this.
Naruto tells his reason, and Kishimoto gives the readers a peek to the past. A moment that was meaningful for both boys. Sasuke is shook and then closes his eyes in thought.
Sasuke awakens his third tomoe, due to the emotional turmoil Naruto’s words have caused, and because of the grief of realising he has to break his bond with Naruto for good.
This is basic visual storytelling. I can’t even process how anyone could bring up a headcanon on how “Sasuke was exhausted, that’s why he awakened the third tomoe, it has nothing to do with emotion” in order to brush away how important Naruto is to Sasuke. All this because Sasuke’s eyes never reacted to Sakura…
Kishimoto would roll his eyes if he knew how some people read his manga. Not even mentioning how Sasuke was trying to get the mangekyo sharingan by killing Naruto, because the trauma and grief due to it would give it to him. In the end he couldn’t do it, but he did get MS when he found out the tragic truth about his clan.
